FRSC has reduced road traffic crashes in Nigeria.
Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Osita Chidoka on Tuesday said the formation of the commission had significantly checked road crashes in the country.
Chidoka said this at a joint news conference of the FRSC and the Federal Ministry of Health in preparatory to the launch of UN’s Decade of Action on Road Safety.
Vice President Namadi Sambo is expected to launch the UN Decade of Action on Road Safety in Nigeria on Wednesday. Chidoka, however, noted that the formation of the commission had not solved the problem of road crashes in the country as there were new problems rising in motorisation.
He said they included increase in population, inadequate funding and weak drivers’ training, among others.
The Corps Marshal said the commission had developed a road map and identified resources required to tackle road traffic crashes resulting in deaths and injuries.
He stressed that aggressive measures needed to be taken to address the road traffic crashes in the country.
According to him, if not urgently addressed, it will take over malaria and tuberculosis to become the third major ``killer of mankind''.
Chidoka described the UN’s Decade of Action as a very important call to duty and called on stakeholders to work together in reducing road traffic crashes in the country.
He called for improvement in road conditions, drivers' training and post-crash care for accident victims to achieve the goals of the UN Decade of Action in the country.
