Immigration deports 100 Nigeriens from Badagry.

No fewer than 100 unregistered Nigeriens trading in Badagry Local Government area of Lagos State were deported over the weekend.

The exercise was carried out by the Nigerian Immigration Service Passport Office in Badagry following a tip-off from an official of the Agbalata Market, Badagry.

Information available showed that the illegal immigrants surfaced in the area a few days after the death of Al-Qaida leader, Osama Bin Laden, and were sleeping in the market.

They were seen to pretend to be hawking herbs in the streets in the day time, only to return to the big internaional market in the night.

Council Manager of Badagry LGA, Dehinde Adetayo whom concerned traders reported to, in return contacted Immigration Office to act fast as the sudden swarming of the area by the aliens called for concern.

Earlier this year, the Immigration Office in Badagry registered all illegal aliens in the area and issued each with an identification card.

62-year-old docked for forgery, obtaining N7.5m falsely.

A 62-year-old man, who allegedly forged the identity card and a Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) letter to obtain N7.5 million from a bank was on Monday docked in Lagos.

Charles Ajibade is standing trial before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on a four-count charge of stealing, conspiracy, forgery and presenting forged documents.

The prosecutor, Insp. Godwin Anyanwu, told the court that the accused with two others now at large committed the offences on Oct. 23, 2010, at Intercontinental Bank Plc, Lagos.

Anyanwu said the accused forged PHCN identity card and a letter, posed as a staff member of PHCN and collected N7.5 million from the bank.

He said the money belonged to Crystalife Assurance Plc., an insurance company, operating at Eleganza House, Joseph Street, Lagos.

He said the offences contravened Sections 390(9), 467(2), 468 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, W.B. Balogun, granted him bail in the sum of N300, 000 with one surety in like sum.

He adjourned the case till June 6 for mention.

Court reserves judgment in divorce suit infinitely.

A Mushin Grade “A” Customary Court in Lagos on Monday reserved judgment in a divorce suit until the husband must have secured a job.

The President of the Court, Abayomi Ipaye reserved the judgment in a suit filed by a fashion designer, Saidat Akande (34), who accused her jobless husband of battering her.

Ipaye said the court would deliver judgment in the suit when Saidat’s husband, Olushola (43), secured a job to enable him to meet his financial responsibilities.

The court president adjourned the case till June 2 for report on whether Olushola would have got a job.

When asked by Ipaye why the court should not delay the judgment, Olushola said that he was tired of coming to the court.

He told the court that he left a job because his employer terminated the appointment of his friend who was employed along with him.

Saidat had prayed the court to dissolve the 14-year-old marriage blessed with three children aged 12, eight and six.

Council worker charged allegedly defiling minor.

An employee of the Lagos Mainland Local Government Council, Ganiyu Ibiyemi on Monday appeared before a magistrates’ court in Lagos for allegedly having carnal knowledge of a nine-year-old girl.

Ibiyemi, 39, was charged with dipping his finger into the private part of the minor, but he pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge before an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ court.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Emmanuel Ajayi said the council worker committed the alleged crime on May 6, at No. 11, Borno Way, Ebute Meta.

Ajayi said Ibiyemi was a co-tenant with the Basic 2 pupil.

The prosecutor said the girl told her father about the development immediately she left Ibiyemi’s room.

Ajayi said the alleged offence contravened Section 218 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.

Magistrate M.O. Olajuwon admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum, and adjourned further hearing in the case till to May 26.

The accused may be sentenced to life imprisonment, if convicted.

Two men in court for alleged attempted rape and stealing.

Two men were on Monday docked in Lagos for allegedly attempting to rape a lady and snatching her bag containing N20,000 and two handsets valued at N45,000.

The accused, Godwin Omokaro and Osagie Salami, both aged 21 are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, attempted rape and stealing before a Surulere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Olaide, told the court that the accused on April 4 at Raimi St., Orile-Iganmu, conspired with five others now at large to steal.

He added that the accused attempted to rape the 21-year-old lady, who immediately raised an alarm and with the help of a vigilance group, apprehended the accused.

He said the offences contravened Sections 359, 390, and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.

The accused pleaded not guilty.

The Chief Magistrate, Abiola Soladoye, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 each, with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned till May 20 for further hearing.

Also, a man who allegedly broke into the home of a businessman and stole N200,000 and three handsets worth N66,000 was docked in the same court.

The accused, Abayomi Adisa, 25, is on trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and stealing.

Olaide told the court that the offences were committed on April 22 at No. 7 Sologun St., Aguda, Surulere.

According to him, the accused burgled the home of one Muri Lawal and stole his money and three Nokia phones.

He submitted that the offences contravened Sections 390 (9), 411, and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

Soladoye granted him N100,000 bail with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till May 25 for further hearing.

24-year-old bus assistant arraigned for alleged robbery.


A 24-year-old bus conductor, Victor Offiong was on Monday arraigned before an Ikeja High Court in Lagos for alleged armed robbery offences.

Offiong, who was arraigned before Justice Olabisi Akinlade, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit armed robbery and a substantial charge of armed robbery.

The prosecutor, Rotimi Odutola alleged that the accused conspired with others at large to rob one Uwadike John along Sheraton Link Road in Ikeja on Dec. 31, 2009.

She alleged that they robbed their victim of N150,000 cash, a mobile phone worth N80,000, and a bag containing other personal effects.

According to her, the offences contravene Sections 403 (a) and 402 (2) (a) of the Criminal Code Law Cap C. Vol.2, Laws of Lagos State 2003.

Offiong pleaded not guilty to the charges and was returned to prison custody.

Akinlade adjourned the case to June 21 for trial.

Six, including two brothers, docked for attempted theft.

Six persons, including two brothers, were on Monday arraigned in Lagos for allegedly attempting to steal.

Ibrahim Adekunle (23), Ibrahim Awoneye (25), Owolabi Elijah (26), Saheed Kamorudeen (20), Akeem Araba (25) and Odujobi Oluwasegun (24) are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and breach of peace, before a Somolu Magistrates’ Court.

The accused, arraigned before Magistrate B.O. Osunsanmi, however pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Insp. A. Adegoke, told the court that the accused were apprehended on May 6, at midnight in an uncompleted building at 18, Onajimi Str., in Somolu, Lagos.

He said the offences were contrary to Sections 68, 508 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.

Magistrate Osunsanmi granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 each, with a surety in like sum.

She adjourned the case till June 6 for further hearing.

Court dissolves 9-year-old marriage over incompatibility.

The Somolu Customary Court in Lagos on Monday dissolved a nine-year-old marriage on the grounds that the couple was incompatibility.

The Court President Modupe Bajulaiye, in her judgment, said the divorce suit commenced on May 31, 2010 and that all efforts by the judges to reconcile the couple had failed.

She ordered the petitioner to give his estranged wife N50,000 to set up a business to enable her to move on with her life.

The court also compelled the petitioner to remit N5,000 monthly to the court for the child upkeep while the custody of the first child aged six was granted to him.

The petitioner, Anthony Obi, a 44 year-old driver with Zenith Bank told the court that his wife Ukamaka was a problem to him because they hardly reason along the same line since they married.

He said both families had intervened to settle the misunderstanding, pointing out that he had no problem with his in-laws but only his wife.

Obi, however, noted that his wife was not having extra-marital affairs in spite of her quarrelsome attitude.

Ukamaka, 40, pleaded with the court to reconcile them and attributed their constant quarrelling to her husband’s lack of care for her.
