Man,31, arrested for allegedly smuggling a stolen car.

A 31-year-old man was arrested by men of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) Lagos, for allegedly attempting to smuggle a stolen car from Nigeria into Benin Republic for sale.
Lekun Ogundare, the police spokesman for FSARS, said on Thursday that the suspect was arrested at Idiroko border area of Ogun.
Ogundare said the suspect was to assist his friend a vehicle spray painter to convey a resprayed car to its owner but decided to drive it across the border for sale.
He said luck, however, ran out on the suspect as the vehicle developed a mechanical fault and broke down close to the border.
Ogundare said officials of the Nigerian Customs were attracted to the scene and after interrogation, suspected that the car was stolen.
“The customs officers arrested the suspect and handed him over to FSARS for prosecution,” Ogundare said.

Accused blames loss of sight on police torture.

An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, will on June 16 rule whether a statement, purportedly signed by an accused while in police detention, was done under duress.
The accused, Tajudeen Bello, 44, during his examination told the court that he was arrested by the police while at work on April 16, 2009, detained and severely tortured for eight days.
The accused was consequently arraigned before Magistrate F. V. Davies-Abegunde on April 23, 2009 on a one-count charge of stealing.
Bello, a former cashier, was charged with allegedly stealing N11 million, property of International Plastics Nigeria Limited, Ijora.
The accused told the court that he was arrested and taken to the Panti Police Station where he was detained, tortured and forced to sign a statement written by the police.
The accused said he continued to shout that the officer should untie him so that he would not die in the process.
Bello said at this stage, he was untied and taken to an office where they forced him to sign the statement, or else the torture would continue.
The prosecutor, Insp. Ezet Obong, cross-examined the accused to establish that he made the statement on his own free will.
The defence counsel, Halima Musa, re-examined the accused to establish that the statement was signed under duress and that the accused lost his sight from the torture he was subjected to at the police station.
The court finally asked the accused some questions, to ascertain whether there was a quarrel between him and the police that resulted in the torture.
It further sought to know the type of instrument used to beat him that made him lose his sight.
The magistrate adjourned the case till June 16 when she would make her ruling.

Businessman in court for allegedly stealing 33,000 litres of petrol.

A 42-year-old businessman, Amadi Ibekwe, who allegedly stole 33,000 litres of petrol, valued at N2.1 million, on Thursday appeared before an Ebute Meta Magistrates` Court, Lagos.
The accused is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing before Magistrate Joy Ugbomoiko.
Ibekwe, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Babaji Ishaku, told the court that the accused and some others, still at large, conspired and stole the product, property of one Freedom Aharanwa.
According to the prosecutor, Ibekwe and his accomplices on Feb. 6 stole the petrol at the Capital Depot, Apapa.
He said the offences were contrary to and punishable under Sections 390 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
The magistrate granted the accused bail in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case till June 8 for further hearing.

Indian hemp smoking breaks 10-year-old marriage.

All what I’ve got from my husband in 10 years of marriage was constant battery, especially after he had smoked Indian –hemp, a 34-year-old teacher, Adeshola Ogunyemi told the Grade “A” Customary Court in Mushin on Thursday.
Adeshola, the petitioner in the divorce suit, urged the court to dissolve the marriage between her and her estranged husband, Adeyinka , 41, on Thursday urged because she was no longer interested in the relationship.
She described her husband as a ``chronic Indian-hemp smoker, who batters me at will, while I was still leaving in his house.’’ She also said her husband had concealed the fact that he earlier had two wives and had many children until after she had married him.
She also pleaded with the court to grant her the custody of the children, adding that her husband had denied her free access to them, in spite of the court order.
The husband consented to the dissolution of the marriage on the ground that his wife was not faithful to him.
The Court President Dr Abayomi Ipaye, who presided over the divorce suit, said that the marriage had broken down irretrievably.
Ipaye ordered that the petitioner’s current partner and the respondent’s sisters should appear in court at their convenient time before the next adjourned datefor dialogue on free access to the children.
He adjourned the case till May 26 for further hearing.

70-year-old man arraigned for alleged theft of materials worth N30m.

A 70-year-old security man, Mustapha Oguntola and a female trader, Oluwadamilare Mohammed, 44, on Thursday appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ court in Lagos for allegedly stealing clothing materials worth N30 million.
The duo was alleged to have broken into a store and stole clothing materials belonging to another trader, Risikat Odumosun.
Oguntola and Mohammed, who are standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and receiving stolen property, however, entered a ``not guilty’’ plea.
The prosecutor, ASP, Innocent Effiong told the court that Oguntola, was a security man to Odumosun at No. 7 Kosoko St., Balogun Market, Lagos Island.
Effiong said the offence committed on April 6 at the complainant’s shop at the above address, contravened Sections 390, 427 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Oguntola, however, told the court that the police gave a wrong address on the charge sheet where the incident took place.
He said: ``the real address is No. 2/4 Kosoko St., Balogun Market, Lagos Island’’.
On conviction, each of the accused may be sentenced to seven years imprisonment.
The Chief Magistrate, Philip Ojo admitted each accused to a bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned further hearing to June 29.

Cashier arraigned for alleged theft of company’s N1.8 million.

A cashier with Diamite Capital Investment Nig. Ltd., Leonard Enegede (34), was on Thursday arraigned in Lagos, for allegedly stealing his employer’s N1.8 million.
The defendant, who is standing trial before an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ court, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of forgery and stealing.
The prosecutor, Insp. Benedict Unawunwa, said that between January and April, Enegbede stole the money from the company at No. 391 Old Ojo Road, Kuje Amuwo, Lagos.
Unawunwa said the accused also forged four cash receipt booklets and used same to collect money from the company’s customers.
He said the offence contravened Sections 390 (6) (9) and 467 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Chief Magistrate, Oluyemisi Adelaja granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
Adelaja said in addition to the bail conditions, the sureties must show evidence of tax payment and have their addresses verified by the prosecutor.
She adjourned the case till June1 for further hearing.

Three urchins in court for allegedly damaging 26 vehicles.

Three miscreants—aka area boys were on Thursday in Lagos arraigned for allegedly using machetes and dangerous weapons on innocent people going about their businesses and damaging 26 vehicles in the process.
The accused, Lukuman Saka (35), Kehinde Raji (32), and Akeem Ramon who appeared before an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ court, are facing a three-count charge of felony, malicious damage and assault.
The trio, however, pleaded not guilty before Senior Magistrate E. A. Ogundare.
The prosecutor, Cpl. John Iberedem, said that the accused had a case to answer, alleging that they conspired with about 50 others now at large to commit the crime.
He said the vehicle owners took to their heels to escape the disruption of public peace caused by the violent behavior of the accused.
He said the police were still searching for the other escapees and that they would face the law whenever they were apprehended.
Iberedem said the offence, committed on May 8 at about 11.30 p.m. at Amukoko-Apapa, Lagos, contravened Sections 320, 324 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Ogundare admitted each of the accused to a bail of N200, 000, with two sureties each in like sum who would also show evidence of tax payment.
He adjourned the case till June 10.

26 arrested over alleged attempted suicide.

A team of railway officials and policemen on Wednesday night in Lagos arrested 26 men, including a deaf and dumb, for allegedly sitting on the roof of a moving train and attempting to commit suicide.
The men were arrested at about 8 p.m. at Iju railway station on the roof of the Iddo-Ijoko mass transit train.
Samuel Elumole, district superintendent of the railways, said in Lagos on Thursday that the men would be charged to court on Friday for “attempting to commit suicide”.
According to Elumole, though the offence carries a fine of N50,000 or a 3-month imprisonment, the Nigeria Railway Corporation will plead that the men be sent to prison as the fine had proved to be no deterrent against this suicidal act.
The Lagos Railway District Manager, John Dottie also appealed to members of the public to desist from sitting on the roof of moving trains as many people have fallen to their deaths this way.
Dottie said further enlightenment on the dangerous issue was being put into fliers, handbills and even giant posters to warn members of the public.
When visited the Ebute Meta office of the railways on Thursday, many parents and relations of the 26 men, who were being detained, were seen pleading with NRC officials for their possible release.

Mechanic charged with manslaughter.

A 27-year-old mechanic, Monsuru Salawu, was on Thursday charged with manslaughter before an Apapa Senior Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
Salawu was arraigned on a four-count charge of manslaughter, reckless driving, unlawful damage and driving without a driver’s licence before Senior Magistrate Amos Adeyemi.
He allegedly killed a middle-aged man, Gabriel Nogumu, while driving recklessly.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Friday Inedu, told the court that Salawu hit and killed the deceased on April 16 2011, while driving dangerously at Mile 2 on Lagos- Badagry Expressway, Lagos.
Inedu said Salawu drove a Nissan Laurel car with Reg. No EC 547 KJA given to him for repair, when the incident occurred.
The mechanic was also charged for damaging the Laurel car belonging to Mr Mokoro Emmanuel.
He said the alleged offences contravened Sections 7 (1), 27 (1), 28 (1) and 29 (1) of the Road Traffic Act (RTA).
Salawu pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge of manslaughter, reckless driving and unlawful damage.
He, however, pleaded guilty to the fourth count charge of driving without a driver’s licence.
The senior magistrate granted the accused bail in the sum of N200 million, two sureties in the like sum and evidence of tax payment.
The court adjourned further hearing in the case till May 25.
