The Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petirin has commended the Nigerian Navy for its efforts at securing the nation’s waterways from pirates and other criminal activities.
Speaking during the ceremonial sunset at the Navy’s 55th anniversary celebration on
Wednesday night in Lagos, Petirin noted that the Navy had come a long way in securing the
country’s territorial waters.
On the security challenges facing the nation, Petirin said that the armed forces do not enforce
laws but could only assist the enforcement agencies to control crisis.
He called on the civilian population to join hands with the security agencies in supporting
government’s effort at curbing clashes and explosions in the country.
Also at the occasion, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Sa’ad Ibrahim said that the Federal
Government has commenced the process of transformation towards repositioning the Navy.
Also speaking at the occasion, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogbor, Flag Officer Commanding,
Western Naval Command, noted that the week-long anniversary afforded the organisation an
opportunity to take the Navy closer to civilians.
Among the activities which took place during the celebration were medical rhapsody, ships open to visitors, sea trip for civilians, donations to school children and commissioning of school projects.
Other dignitaries at the ceremony included the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Mohammed Umar and former Chief of General Staff, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe.
