Crime rate in Lagos, still low
The Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Fola Arthur-Worrey on Wednesday dismissed claims that there was a surge in crime rate in Lagos metropolis.
Arthur-Worrey said few robbery cases in parts of the state should not be misinterpreted as a surge in crime rate.
Some residents of the state had raised serious concerns about the sudden outbreak of high cases of armed attacks in recent times.
These, they claimed, had virtually punctured the relative peace and security the residents had enjoyed in the state before now.
Some people said invasion of residents by hoodlums and snatching of bags and other personal effects had been on the increase lately.
Arthur-Worrey said government was committed to tackling the problem through the fund’s procurement of equipment for the police.
He said the Fund has in the past few years supported the state`s Police command with equipment such as armoured personnel carriers, helicopters, patrol vans and other facilities to tackle crime head on.
He said the Trust would continue to support the Police to facilitate their responsibility of maintaining law and order in the state.
Meanwhile, Taiwo Akinola, a resident of Araromi St., Iyana Ipaja has urged security personnel to rise to the challenge posed by the many renewed attacks by armed robbers on residents in the area.
Akionla, whose house was invaded by robbers early Tuesday, said cases of robbery attacks on Lagos residents in recent times were becoming rampant in some areas.
Governor Babatunde Fashola had said at a forum in 2010 that the government had reduced crime rate in the state by 80 per cent, making Lagos one of the safest states in the country.
