Court adjourns case of lotto proceed theft.
A Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Thursday adjourned till July 13 for cross examination of a prosecution witness in a case of theft of lotto proceeds.
The Chief Magistrate, Abiola Soladoye adjourned the case to enable the defendant, Tobi Adeyemi, to get a counsel to cross examine the witness, Olumide Olusanya.
Olusanya was led in evidence by the prosecutor, Sgt. Sunday Olaide at the resumed hearing of the case on Thursday.
He is the first prosecution witness.
The defendant, a 24-year-old an sub-agent of the Premier Lotto, was arraigned on April 4 over theft of N272, 000.
The money was said to belong to the prosecution witness who is also a principal agent at the Premier Lotto.
The prosecutor, Olaide, had told the court that the accused converted proceeds from the lotto business for his personal use.
Olusanya testified that the defendant sought to work under him as a sub-agent.
He informed the court that the accused did not remit about N1.3 million to the office on that day.
He said the defendant claimed that he was attacked and beaten by the police on the said date, and that they took all the money from him.
He testified that some boys who worked with the defendant said that the accused spent the money with them.
The other boys have paid, but the defendant is yet to pay,`` he testified, noting that the accused was supposed to pay back N272,000 out of the N1.3 million.

Tenant injures pregnant landlady over waste disposal levy .
The police in Lagos on Thursday arraigned a suspected recalcitrant tenant who allegedly pushed down her pregnant landlady during a quarrel over non-payment of levies.
The accused, Uju Iwuchukwu (36), is facing a one-count charge of assault before Senior Magistrate Aderemi Gbajumo of a Surulere Magistrates’ court.
Iwuchukwu, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Idowu Onime told the court that the alleged incident occurred on June 3 at No. 4, Iworo St., Orile- Iganmu.
The prosecutor said the accused inflicted injuries on the pregnant woman.
He said the alleged offence contravened Section 355 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
The court granted the accused bail in the sum of N10,000 with one surety in like sum.
The case has been adjourned till June 16 for further hearing.

Security guard, 2 others charged with theft.
Three persons, including a security guard, were on Thursday arraigned before a Somolu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing $19,000 (N2.85 million) cash and other property worth N1.6 million.
The trio Samuel Ukpong (47), Ige Babatunde (38) and Emeka Ezeife - are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and breach of the peace before Magistrate B.O. Osunsanmi.
The prosecutor, Insp. A. Adegoke, told the court that the accused and others still at large conspired and stole the items which belonged to the Institute of Business Development.
He alleged that the accused stole one laptop, softwares, one projector and cash.
Adegoke said the alleged theft occurred between Feb. 28 and March 3, 2011 at Niger Insurance House, Anthony Village, Lagos.
According to the prosecutor, the accused on the same date and time at the aforesaid place did conduct themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace.
He said the alleged offences were contrary to Sections 249, 390 (9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate Osunsanmi granted the accused N100,000 bail each, with a surety in like sum, and adjourned the case till Aug. 5 for further hearing.

2 men charged with theft of 27 bags of sugar.
Two men, who allegedly stole 27 bags of sugar valued at N297,000, were on Thursday charged before an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
The accused Adamu Aminu, 31, and Ahmed Garba, 24 who are facing a two-count charge of felony and stealing, however, pleaded not guilty.
However, the prosecutor, Insp. Benedict Unawunwa, said the accused had a case to answer over the theft of the 27 bags of sugar, property of BUA Nig. Ltd.
He said the duo committed the alleged offence on April 22 at the company premises at Tin Can Island Port, Apapa, by claiming ownership of the items.
Unawunwa told the court that the accused also conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace.
The offence, he said, contravened Sections 390 (9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Chief Magistrate Oluyemisi Adelaja admitted the accused to a bail in the sum of N30,00 each, with one surety in like sum.
She said the sureties should show evidence of tax payment in Lagos State.
The case has been adjourned till June 22.

Police arraign 2 for rape.
For allegedly raping a 22-year-old woman, two men were on Thursday charged before an Apapa Senior Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
The accused Chima Okorie, 23, and Sarafa Suleiman, 33 – who are facing a two-count charge of felony and rape, however, pleaded not guilty.
But the prosecutor, Sgt. Uche Kalu, told the court that the accused and an accomplice, still at large, committed the offence in spite of their plea of innocence.
According to him, the accused lured the woman to an isolated place and raped her one after the other.
Kalu said the offence, which was committed on May 31 at about 11.30 p.m. at Kema Road, Ijora-Badia, a Lagos suburb, contravened Sections 357, and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
The Senior Magistrate, A. K. Shonubi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 each with two sureties each in like sum and adjourned the case till June 27 for further hearing. ......................
Insurance worker arraigned over N1.2m theft.
An employee of the Alliance Life Assurance Company, Blossom Ogbonna, on Thursday appeared before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing N1.2 million belonging to the company.
Ogbonna, 34, is standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
The prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, said that Ogbonna and some others still at large committed the alleged offence between January 2009 and November 2010 at Ajose Adegun Street on Victoria Island.
Nwosu said the accused was a cashier at the company and that he failed to remit the sum into the company’s bank account.
He said the alleged offence contravened Sections 390(9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, Mulikat Alli-Balogun, granted her N800,000 bail ,with two sureties in like sum, and adjourned the case till June 22 for further hearing.

2 docked for obtaining N1.9m under pretence.
Two middle aged men, who allegedly obtained N1.9 million under the pretext of selling a plot of land to the complainant, were on Thursday arraigned at an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The duo, Oluwafemi Akisoji, 46, and Ganiyu Adeosun, 54, are facing a two-count charge of fraud and conspiracy before Magistrate A.A. Famobiwo.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Haruna Ibrahim, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Nov. 18, 2009 at United Bank for Africa, Idi-Araba branch, Lagos.
Ibrahim said the two men sold the plot, situated in Ibafo town in Ogun, for N1.9 million to one Julius Oreyemi, knowing that the land belonged to one Prophet Obadare.
He said the alleged offence contravened Sections 419 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Famobiwo granted them bail in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case till June 22 for further hearing.

Court dissolves 19-year-old marriage over husband’s infidelity.
A Grade “A” Customary Court in Mushin, Lagos, on Thursday dissolved the 19-year-old marriage between Mr Francis Adegboyega and his wife, Omolara.
Omolara, a 44-year-old nurse, had gone to court seeking the dissolution of the marriage, alleging infidelity on the husband’s part.
The Court President, Abayomi Ipaye, said on Thursday while dissolving the marriage, that efforts to reconcile the estranged couple had failed.
The court president said the children’s welfare was vital as they should not be made to suffer due to the breakup.
He said the first child, who is aged 19, should decide for himself who he wanted to live with, while referring the custody of the two other children, aged 14 and eight, to the family court for adjudication.
He ordered the respondent to remit N3,000 monthly to his wife for the upkeep of the last child, who currently lives with his mother.
She pleaded with the court to grant her the custody of the three children, saying that she had been responsible for the children upkeep since birth.

24-year-old docked for impersonating naval officer.
A 24 year-old man, Sunday Agboola, was on Thursday in Lagos docked at an Apapa Senior Magistrates’ Court for allegedly impersonating a naval officer.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Uche Kalu, told the court that Agboola was arrested on May 29 at about 9.30 p.m. at the railway line, Ijora-Badia, Lagos, impersonating a naval officer.
Kalu said the accused had been parading himself as a naval officer and harassing residents.
He said the offence was contrary to and punishable under Sections 109 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos 2003.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge.
Senior Magistrate A.K. Shonubi granted the accused bail in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned further hearing in the case till June 20.
