Alleged motorcycle robber arraigned in court

Halaudu Mohammed, 28, was on Monday in Lagos arraigned before Magistrate B.O.Osunsanmi of the Somolu Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a motorcycle.

Mohammed is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing a motorcycle worth N 102, 000 belonging to Kabiru Ahmed.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Prosecutor, Insp. A. Adegoke, told the court that the accused with others still at large, on May 24 conspired to commit the offence at Iyana-Oworo axis of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.

He said the accused boarded the complainant’s motorcycle which he (Ahmed) was using for commercial purpose from Mile 12 to Victoria Island (VI) on that fateful day.

According to the prosecutor, Ahmed saw the accused with his motorcycle three weeks later at Ojota Bus-stop. It was being used for commercial purposes.

He told the court that Ahmed pursued the accused until he caught him and thereafter, brought the matter to the attention of police.

Adegoke said the offence was contrary to Sections 390(9) and 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos State.

The magistrate granted Mohammed bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

She subsequently adjourned the case till June 29 for further hearing.

Man who allegedly demolished another person’s property docked.

The police in Lagos on Monday arraigned Sam Oyemade at the Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court for alleged wrongful demolition of another person’s three-bedroom apartment.

Oyemade, 48, is standing trial on a one count-charge of malicious damage.

The accused, according to the charge sheet allegedly demolished an uncompleted three-bedroom flat valued N2m arbitrarily and illegally.

The Prosecutor, Cpl. Oladejo Balogun told the court that the accused committed the alleged offence on Oct. 13, 2010 at about 9 a.m. at Isheri, Idimu area of Lagos.

Balogun said the accused destroyed the property of one Fatai Bamiduro and started erecting his own building on the site.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N150, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate, Maimunat Folami adjourned the case till June 22 for further hearing.

Apprentice pleads guilty to stealing, knows fate June 9

An apprentice, Wasiu Olaniyi, who on Monday pleaded guilty to a count charge of stealing before a Surulere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, will know his fate on June 9.

The Senior Magistrate, Aderemi Gbajumo adjourned the case till June 9 for the facts and possible sentencing.

Olaniyi, 22, was arraigned for allegedly stealing goods valued at N38,000 belonging to a businessman, Mr Obumneke Chukwudulo.

Earlier, the proseutor, Cpl. Samuel Ishola told the court that the accused on May 21, stole the goods which included a Samsung air conditioner and a table top fridge.

He said the offence was committed at the residence of Chukwudulo at No 26, Ogungbesan St., Coker, Orile.

Ishola said the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.

LASPOTECH student faces N3.3m theft charge

A student of the Lagos State Polytechnic, Patricia Jinanwa, on Monday before an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court for alleged house breaking and N3.3 million theft.

The accused, 23, is standing trial on a six-count charge of burglary and stealing to which she has pleaded not guilty.

The prosecution said Jinanwa committed the offence when she broke into the house of three residents of Glover Estate, Ebute Meta, Lagos, and stole jewelry worth N3.3 million.

Samuel Omoyeni, a police inspector, told the court that Jinanwa broke into the flat of Mrs Dayo Gambo and carted off gold worth N2.6 million.

He said the accused also broke into the flats of Amechi Ngozi and Chidi Mozie on the estate and stole jewelry and perfumes worth N658,000.

According to the prosecutor, the accused used a chisel to open the locks of the flats.

Omoyeni said the offence committed on May 31 contravened the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.

The counsel to the accused, Ola Ogunniyi, said the HND 1 student deserved sympathy.

He urged the court to be lenient with the accused and also grant her bail on liberal terms.

The accused, on conviction, may be sentenced to seven years imprisonment.

Magistrate M.O. Olubi admitted the accused to a bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties each in like sum, one of whom must be a community leader.

He adjourned the case till July 6 for further hearing.

Estate agent docked for defrauding prospective tenant

A 55-year-old estate agent, Bode Olaleye, who allegedly defrauded an accommodation seeker of N110, 000 was arraigned on Monday in Lagos.

Olaleye is facing a two-count charge of obtaining money under false pretenses and stealing before the Somolu Magistrates’ Court.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges after they were read to him.

The Prosecutor, Insp. A. Adegoke, said the accused collected the amount from the complainant under the pretense that he would assist him to get accommodation.

He told the court that the accused committed the offences on Feb. 2, 2011 at No. 14, Olaleye Str., Somolu in Lagos.

The offences, he said, contravened Sections 419, Cap 17, Vol. 11 and 390 of the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos State.

The Magistrate, B.O. Osunsanmi, admitted the accused to N200, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case till July 20 for further hearing.
