Undergraduate in court over acid bath.




A 31-year-old undergraduate, Dada Adewumi, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court for allegedly bathing a man with acid.
The prosecutor, Sgt Causin Adams, told the court that the accused had on May 27 at Ajah, Lagos, poured acid on one Mr Mayowa Kolapo, causing extensive injuries to his face.
Adams alleged that Adewumi had waylaid his unsuspecting victim in the dark and attacked him with the acid, following an argument.
He said doctors were still battling to help Kolapo to regain the use of one of his eyes, having lost the other eye to the attack.
Adams said the offence contravened section 335 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2003.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate, Makanju Oshodi, granted the accused N300,000 bail with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till June 26 for further hearing. .......................................................................................................



5 arraigned for defraudng American.




Five persons were on Tuesday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly defrauding an American of 27,000 dollars (N4.2 million).
The accused persons, Olagoke Uthman, 30, Innocent Angiu, 23, Ugba Martins, 26, Maduka Joy, 26 and Jane Awhin, 51 are facing a four-count charge of conspiracy, stealing, forgery and unlawfully operating an illegal agency.
The prosecutor, Sgt Frank Ifijen, said Uthman, Angiu, Martins and Awhin stole 15,000 dollars cash and household items worth 12,200 dollars from the American, Mr Robert Black.
He said the offence was committed on May 27 at Osborne Estate, Ikoyi.
The prosecutor alleged that the accused persons used forged documents of an unregistered company – Jane & Sons - in perfecting their nefarious act.
He said the offence contravened Sections 390, 465, 473 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State 2003.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate, A.A. Adefulire, granted the accused N200,000 bail with two sureties each in like sum and adjourned the case till July 11 for further hearing.

Bus driver charged with manslaughter.




A 35-year-old commercial bus driver was on Tuesday arraigned before an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court for causing the death of one Mr Enegene Udeh.
The accused, Biodun Yekini, is facing a three-count charge of manslaughter, dangerous and reckless driving and driving without a driver’s licence.
The prosecutor, Insp. Benedict Unawunwa, said Yekini drove a commercial bus with Reg. No. XB 788 HAL and caused Udeh’s death.
He said the accused committed the offence on June 1, at about 5.30 a.m. along Mobil Road, Ajegunle, Apapa, Lagos.
According to the prosecutor, the accused also had a head-on collision with a tricycle with a Reg. No. QY 594 KSF and damaged it in the process.
He said the offence contravened Sections 7 (1), 18 and 33 of the Road Traffic Act (RTA) of Lagos State.
The Chief Magistrate, Oluyemisi Adelaja, granted the accused N500,000 bail and adjourned further hearing in the case till July 13. .......................................................................................................



Receptionist stabs co-worker.




The police in Lagos on Tuesday arraigned a receptionist, Kikelomo Akinola, for allegedly stabbing her colleague with a broken bottle.
Akinola, 28, is standing trial before an Ejigbo Magistrates Court on a two count-charge of stabbing and causing grievous harm.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Oladejo Balogun, said the accused committed the alleged offence on June 8 at about 8.45p.m. at the Radhour Guest House, Igando, where the duo worked.
Balogun said the accused stabbed the co-worker, Lucky Okhihie, on the face, following a misunderstanding between them.
He submitted that the alleged offences contravened Sections 335 and 338 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.
The complainant said he would want the case withdrawn because of pleas by the Akinola’s relatives.
Magistrate Maimunat Folami granted the request of the complainant and consequently struck out the case.
