Lagos Govt. shuts 16 firms for alleged non-remittance of taxes.
The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has closed down 16 companies for alleged non-remittance of taxes to the tune of N75.8 million
Head of Enforcement Unit,Afolashade Afolayan said in Lagos that the companies defaulted to remit the taxes between 2002 and 2009.
Afolayan said the clampdown was part of state government’s effort to recover all unremitted taxes to government coffers.
According to her, the government is working within the ambit of the law to build a fair and just tax system.
Afolayan said the law provided ample opportunities for companies to remit taxes to the state government conveniently.
Officials of some of the sealed companies, however, said that they were not aware they owed such huge sums.
They urged the state government to reopen their firms, pending when they would be in position to remit the outstanding taxes.
