Court dissolves marriage over husband’s drunkenness

A Grade A Customary Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has dissolved a three-year-old marriage between Emmanuel Faleye and Victoria , his wife, over the drinking and smoking habit of the former.

The Court President, Remi Adesanya said Victoria had on July 5 filed a divorce suit against her husband, who, she said was absent in court throughout the hearing.

Adesanya said all efforts by the judges to settle the estranged couple proved abortive as the respondent refused to appear in court but said the court has no option than to dissolve the union.

Victoria an auxiliary nurse, told the court that her husband was an irresponsible man and was fond of drinking and smoking marijuana.

She told the court that her husband, a non-academic employee of the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, usually beat her after smoking marijuana .

She pleaded with the court to grant her the custody of the only child of the marriage, aged two-and-half years,as the child still needs motherly care.

The Court President, however, referred the custody of the child to the Family Court for further adjudication.
