How to tackle Boko Haram
former National Security Adviser, Lieutenant General Aliyu Gusau (rtd) believes the current security challenges facing the country can be contained provided the Federal Government adopts the right strategy.
Gusau expressed confidence that the present situation was not beyond redemption .
According to him, needs a multi-dimensional strategy to address the root causes of insecurity while suppressing the negative manifestations through appropriate use of national power.
He noted that to make the country safe and secure there must be a sound security strategy and investment in the requisite security infrastructure.
The strategy, he added, would determine how the nation employs the various elements of power to make the country safe and secure.
Noting that occasional drafting of the military to quell crises was acceptable, he however warned that the prolonged involvement of military troops in the maintenance of internal security is, on the long-run, counter-productive and should be avoided.
On the nation’s unity, Gusau said the claim of unity in diversity was faulty in view of the constant urge to balkanize the country into smaller political units, which he said accentuates differences rather than cements integration.
He therefore stated that the preservation of the country against threats to its survival, from internal and external sources, and the guarantee of the freedom to pursue vital interests without hindrances must be given the highest priority.
He also added that security has become the most pressing concern of every Nigerian. He also sounded a warning that security cannot be considered in isolation, as according to him, “but as part of the overall framework for governance.”.
He further added, “many issues have linkages to the quality of security which is attained or attainable. These include economy, religion, labour, politics and others.
“These consideration of policies in any area of endeavour should, therefore, factor in security considerations from the beginning.”
He also stated that bad policies most times create security challenges which the security system is then required to contain or countervail, a situation he said is avoidable.
