The police in Lagos State have arrested six people, suspected to be members of the Odua People’s Congress (OPC) for allegedly forcefully taking over a shipping company in Apapa area of the state.
The police in the state are also on the trail of about 20 members of the group, who escaped, after a team of anti-riot policemen stormed the prmises of the company.
A police source informed the Nigerian Tribune that about 30 fully armed members of the group had a few days ago stormed the premises of Clarion Shipping West Africa, Navy Town, Old Ojo Road, Alakija. and succeeded in forcefully evicting owners of the company and their staff.
Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the heavily armed men were invited by a director of the shipping company who had a misunderstanding with the management.
The unnamed director was said to be having an issue with the company, over unpaid debt, which according to him must be paid “ by all means”
A senior management staff of the company, who pleaded anonymity, confessed to the police that the unnamed director was actually being owed some amount of money by the company’s management.
He, however, added that that the management of the company had already paid about 80 per cent of the money and was making plans to make the final 20 per cent, when the armed men invaded the premises.
The image maker in charge of the state police command, Samuel Jinadu, confirmed the arrest and said that several live ammunition, machetes and charms were recovered from the suspects.
In a related development, there was confusion in Lagos on Thursday, as heavily armed members of the Odua People’s Congress (OPC)protested in some parts of the state.
The OPC members, who were carrying placards with the inscription “ NO TO BOKO HARAM IN LAGOS “ created fears among many residents of the state as they shot into the air intermittently.
Hoodlums raze Lagos police station.
Unidentified men in Lagos stormed the Mile 12 Police Station in Ketu area of Lagos around 8.30pm, burning it down with a device suspected to be a petrol bomb.
It was not known what could have caused the violence as at the time of going to press on Thursday.
An eyewitness, who was on his way to the police station to lodge a complaint about an accident involving his car just before the Mile 12 bridge, said the suspected arsonists attacked the police station from the Ajelogo end of the bridge.
The source, who simply put his name as Brown, said, “I was on my way to the police station with the taxi driver who ran into my car few metres to the station to complain when I saw some people running towards us. I saw some people also running towards the police station. Within a twinkle of an eye, they threw some objects to the police station and it caught fire.
“I had to run back to my car and ran from the area in order not be caught in the confusion.
Meanwhile, The Lagos State Police Command has debunked report that Mile 12 Police post was burnt as erroneously published by some daily news paper and radio stations.
Police Public Relation Officer, Deputy Suprintendent of Police, Samuel Jinadu said the truth of the matter is that some suspected criminals attacked the police post yesterday because some of them were raided by the police in the area.
Jinadu however said, the timely intervention of the police saved the situation, and that everything is under control and investigation is still on going.
He said the publication was malicious and a calculated attempt to batter the good image of the command has losing grip of security in the state.
The spoke man advised members of the public to continue to go about their lawful duties and businesses as adequate security has been provided to forestall any ugly occurence.
