Court adjourns rape case till Lovers’ Day.

An Apapa Magistrates Court on Monday adjourned the trial of a trader, Maurice Obuogoi, who allegedly raped a minor, till Feb. 14, St. Valentine’s Day, otherwise known as Lovers` Day.

Obuogoi, (32), who was first arraigned on Nov. 30, 2010, has had the matter adjourned twice.

The accused, who is facing a one-count charge of rape, was granted bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum after he pleaded not guilty.

Two rape cases are pending in the court while three have been disposed of.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Uche Kalu, had alleged that the trader defiled a 12-year-old girl, whom he allegedly lured to his shop.

He said the offence was committed on Nov. 13, 2010 at about 5 p.m. at 12, Akere St., Kirikiri Town, Apapa, a contravention of Section 218 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.

Speaking under cross examination, a witness, Mary John, who identified herself as the sister to the girl, said her dress and pant were stained with blood after the sexual assault.

Senior Magistrate, A.K. Shonubi, adjourned the case till Feb. 14 for further hearing.

Police arraign 3 over theft of aluminum pipes.

Three men, who allegedly stole N100,000 cash and aluminum pipes worth N32,000, were on Monday in Lagos charged before an Apapa Magistrates Court.

The trio -- Chibuike Benard, (22), Awolu Mustapha, (23) and Abubakar Sodiq, (25) -- are standing trial on a two-count charge of felony and stealing.

The men, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges and were each granted bail in the sum of N30,000 with one surety in like sum.

According to the prosecutor, Cpl. Friday Inedu, the accused stole the money and four sacks containing copper wire and aluminum pipes.

He said the alleged offence, which was committed on Jan. 9 under the flyover at Ijora, contravened Sections 390 (9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, laws of Lagos State.

Senior Magistrate, A.K. Shonubi, adjourned the case till Feb. 7.

Welding apprentice in court for causing the death of an elderly man.

A 30-year-old welding apprentice, Christopher Asuquo, was on Monday charged to court in Lagos for causing the death of an elderly man.

Asuquo is facing one count-charge of causing the death of one Pa Kwesi, a Ghanaian, before Folashade Kayode of an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court, Lagos .

The Prosecutor, Insp. Paul Inedu, told the court that an argument ensued between the accused and Kwesi, both of who boarded a commercial bus to Olodi-Apapa on Nov.3, 2010.

Inedu explained that the quarrel was over why the bus driver stopped at Kirikiri to refuel.

According to him, in the heat of the argument, Asuquo allegedly slapped Kwesi who slumped and was taken to a hospital where he was later confirmed dead.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 325 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State and was punishable with life imprisonment.

The accused pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Kayode adjourned the case till Jan.19 for further hearing.

In another development, a female sales attendant, Oluwatoyin Mohammed, and an accomplice were arraigned at an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing N835,880 from their employer.

Mohammed, 21, and Johnson Kolawole, 62, are standing trial before Chief Magistrate Philip Ojo, on a three-count charge of conspiracy, forgery and stealing.

The Prosecutor, ASP Innocent Effiong, said Mohammed who was a Tianshi medicine distributor for Oluwatosin Macaulay, conspired with Kolawole to forge and alter figures in the company’s order form.

He said the forgery was perpetuated in February 2010 at 564 Ikorodu road, Ketu, with the intent of using it to steal N835,880 from Macaulay.

Effiong said the offence contravened Sections 390 (9), 467 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State and was punishable with seven years imprisonment.

Each of the accused pleaded not guilty and was admitted to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Ojo adjourned the case till March 10, for further hearing.

Court orders NFA, 10 others to maintain status quo.

Justice Okechukwu Okeke, sitting at the Federal High Court, Lagos on Monday ordered parties in the suit filed by a Lagos-based lawyer Jiti Ogunye to maintain status quo pending the hearing of the suit.

Ogunye had sued the Nigeria Football Association NFA and 10 others, asking the court to grant an order of interlocutory injunction restraining some NFA officers from parading themselves as duly elected officers of the association's board.

He said this was because the elections held on Aug. 26, 2010 into the NFA Board was illegal, following the order of Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court on Sept. 6 which annulled the elections.

He averred that the members had since reinstated themselves were now discharging the functions and duties of the offices.

Joined as defendants in the suit are the Registered Trustees of the National Association of Nigeria Footballers NANF, Alhaji Aminu Maigari, Nigeria Premier League Board, Davidson

Owumi, the Minister of Sports, the Director-General of National Sports Commission, the Electoral Committee, Nigeria Football Association, A. U Mustapha, Inspector-General of Police and the Attorney–General of the Federation.

At the resumed hearing of the case on Monday, Owumi, through his counsel, Aideloje Bello, told the court that his client had filed a motion seeking an order of interlocutory injunction restraining the NFA from enforcing the Akin Ibidapo-Obe arbitration panel.

He said the panel which was set up by the NFA on June 21, 2010 ordered Owumi to vacate his position as Chairman of the Nigerian Premier League Board and ordered a fresh election slated for Jan. 12.

Justice Okechukwu Okeke adjourned the matter till Jan. 17 for hearing of Owumi’s motion and ordered parties to maintain status quo.
