Jonathan holds emergency meeting on security

President Goodluck Jonathan held an emergency national security meeting in Abuja on Monday where three vital decisions were taken.

In attendance at the meeting were the National Security Adviser, retired Lt.-Gen. Owoye Azazi, and heads of Federal Government security agencies, including that of the State Security Services.

The meeting decided that the president would appoint a Special Adviser on Terrorism within the next one week and work with the National Assembly for a speedy passage of the anti-terrorism Bill before the lawmakers.

It also decided that Closed Circuit Television would be installed in public places across the country to enhance security surveillance.

The meeting came on the heels of mounting incidence of bombing and security breaches in many parts of the country.

The latest bomb explosion took place on the eve of the new year at a Mammy’’ market located near the Mogadishu military cantonment in Abuja in which many people were killed or wounded.
On the eve of last Christmas and week before the Abuja bombing, tension rose in Jos as bombs were detonated by yet unknown persons.

Just as bombs were exploding in Jos, there were sporadic shootouts in Maiduguri between security operatives and a group, which also resulted in loss of lives and the razing of places of worship.
