Two Drug Suspects Nabbed.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, South-West Nigeria, has arrested two suspected drug traffickers in connection with attempt to unlawfully export 2.485 kilogrammes of methamphetamine.
The suspects, Peter Ejike Metuh, 41, and Osuekpe Isigwe Chiegbeiro, 49, tested positive for drug ingestion during screening of passengers on Qatar Airways flight, the agency said in a statement today.
Peter, who was going to Japan, ingested 63 pellets of methamphetamine that weighed 1.020 kilogrammes. The second suspect, Osuekpe, was on his way to Malaysia with 1.465 kilogrammes of methamphetamine, the NDLEA Head of Public Affairs, Mitchell Ofoyeju, said.
It was learnt that the suspects denied being in possession of narcotics despite the scan results. However, after about 24 hours under the Agency’s observation, they began excreting the drugs.
Reacting to the arrest, the NDLEA Commander at the Airport, Hamza Umar said:
This is certainly not the first time that drug suspects will deny scan results.
All that is required is just hours of observation and the truth will come out.
When the duo said that they had no drugs initially, we concentrated on the scan result and told the airline that we have reasonable cause to hold back the passengers for observation and that was all.
Few hours later when they began excreting the pellets of drugs, there was no more argument”
Chairman/Chief Executive of the agency, Ahmadu Giade said that the officers acted professionally.
He also warned drug traffickers to quit the obnoxious trade.
The officers acted professionally because the result of scan test is valid evidence. Anyone that attempts to smuggle drugs will be detected, arrested and prosecuted,” Giade warned.
