NBA urges IGP to prosecute political thugs, sponsors.

The Nigerian Bar Association on Wednesday in Lagos called on the Inspector General of Police, Hafiz Ringim to prosecute political thugs and their sponsors.

Chairman, Ikeja Branch, Adebamigbe Omole made the call at a news briefing ahead of its 7th Annual Gani Fawenhinmi Lecture/Symposium which, scheduled to hold on Jan. 15 in Lagos.

Omole said the call was imperative following the incessant violence which has characterized the primaries of the various political parties across the country in the past few weeks.

According to him, We are talking of internal democracy and, if what we have got during the primaries of the various political parties is what we are going to witness during the April elections, then there is a problem.

He noted that politics is not a “do or die affair”, and warned that there would be voters’ apathy in the forthcoming elections if the government should fail to address the issue of security at the polling stations.

Also speaking, the chairman of the Symposium Committee, Bamidele Aturu noted that the lecture, which would be the second in the series after the demise of the rights crusader, is themed: “Electoral Challenges and the Judiciary: Wither Democracy in Nigeria?”

Aturu said the lecture which would be delivered by Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi would be chaired by Justice George Oguntade.
