Tribunal strikes out 40 complaints brought against NPC
The Census Tribunal sitting in Abuja said it had struck out 40 petitions out of the 142 cases filed against the National Population Commission by some states over the 2006 Population Census.
The Tribunal A Chairman, Abraham Yisa said the 40 complaints were struck out due to lack of diligent prosecution.
Yisa noted that 23 out of the overall petitions struck out were filed by some local governments in Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi and Edo states.
He also noted that of the cases, 42 were at the stage of further mention, 36 at hearing, 21 for definite hearing with one at the adoption of address.
He said other cases were at the stage of defence.
The chairman noted that the Tribunal was set up by section 28 of the NPC’s Act Cap No 67 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
The Commission conducted the National Population and Housing Census in 2006 as well as an Enumeration Survey.
The census put the total population of the country at 140,431,790 comprising 71,345,488 males and 69,086,302 females.
