Police arraign 2 men for biting women.

Two men, who allegedly bit two women, were on Wednesday charged before a Surulere Magistrates Court, Lagos.

The duo - Lucky Onyachalam, 39, and Biodun Kareem, 20 -- were separately arraigned.
Onyachalam, who is facing a one-count charge of causing bodily harm, however, pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Raji Hakeem, told the court that Onyachalam bit Ms Obi Nwachukwu near her right eye on Dec. 28, 2010 at a hotel located at 6, Atan St., Surulere, following an argument.

Hakeem said the offence contravened Section 335 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.

Counsel to the accused, Akinsegun Babafemi, urged the court to grant him bail, saying the offence was bailable.

The Senior Magistrate, A. O. Gbajuwon, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till Feb. 2, 2011 for trial.

For Kareem, who allegedly bit the right ear of one Ms Joy Lucky, the court also granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

The prosecution said Kareem committed the offence during an argument that ensued between him and the woman at the same hotel on Atan St., Surulere, on Nov. 22, 2010.

Kareem, however, pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of causing grievous harm, punishable under Section 335 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.

The case has been adjourned till Feb. 18 for hearing.

Magistrate remands masquerade in prison custody over theft, assault charges.

The Mushin Magistrates Court, Lagos, on Tuesday ordered the remand of a masquerade and his aide at the Kirikiri Prisons for attacking a man with a cutlass.

The masquerade, along with his aide, whose name was given as Solomon Okon , 20, was accused of attacking one Emman Udoh at about 9 p.m. at Agunlejika Street, Ijeshatedo, Lagos, on Jan. 1
They faced a four-count charge, including conspiracy and theft, before Chief Magistrate, Christiana Adesola-Ikpatt.

They were also accused of stealing a purse containing N26,000, a key and an ear ring at a beer parlour, property of one Glory Thompson.

The prosecutor, Sulieman Olabode, said that the masquerade was found armed with a cutlass, which he allegedly carried with the intent to commit felony.

The prosecutor alleged that the duo unlawfully assaulted Udoh with a cutlass and inflicted an injury on his head.

According to him, the offence is contrary to and punishable under Sections 390 and 355 of the Criminal Code Capt C38, Laws of Lagos State.

When the duo pleaded guilty, the magistrate adjourned the case till Jan. 5 for facts and sentence.
The accused were, however, not brought to court on Jan. 5, as the magistrate was informed that the vehicle assigned to convey them developed some mechanical faults.

The case was adjourned to Feb. 1.

Police arraign man for allegedly robbing a woman of N6,400.

A 26-year-old man, believed to be a secondary school dropout, Emmanuel Bassey, was on Wednesday in Lagos arraigned for forcefully entering a woman’s house and stealing N6,400.

Arraigned on a one-count charge of stealing at a Surulere Magistrates Court, Bassey, however, pleaded not guilty.

But the prosecutor, Sgt. Idowu Onime, insisted that the accused committed the offence on Dec. 26, 2010 at 13, Atunrase Str., Surulere.

He alleged that the accused, armed with a knife, entered Omoniyi Olanike’s flat, held her hostage and stole the money.

Onime said the Bassey was caught at the point of entering his house also in the neighbourhood.

He urged the court not to grant the accused bail because he had earlier been arraigned in 2010 for allegedly beating his mother, Patience Bassey, and dispossessing her of her money.

The offence, according to him, contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, laws of Lagos State.

The Senior Magistrate, M.K.O. Fadeyi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case till Feb.2, 2011 for hearing.

Lorry driver docked for allegedly causing motorcyclist’s death.

The Police in Lagos on Wednesday arraigned a lorry driver, Vincent Enyesiobi, for allegedly causing the death of a commercial motorcyclist, Odera Obiako.

Enyesiobi, 54, is standing trial before an Ejigbo Magistrates Court in Lagos on a two-count charge of dangerous driving and causing the death of a motorcyclist.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Oladejo Balogun, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Dec. 27, 2010 on Odo Isut Road, Igando, Lagos.
Balogun said Enyesiobi drove a tipper with registration number AW 733 KJA dangerously on the public highway which caused Obiako’s death.

He said the accused tried to overtake the motorcyclist but could not and while trying to manipulate the lorry, he (Enyesiobi) hit him from behind.

He said the offence contravened Sections 27 and 28 (1) of the Lagos State Road Traffic Laws.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Maimunat Folami, granted Enyesiobi bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned till Jan.26 for trial.
