IG Abubakar, Others Mourn Haruna John
The acting Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, has expressed sadness over the tragic death yesterday of the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG John Haruna who was in charge of Ooperations, ‘B’ Department, Abuja.
Three other officers, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Garba Yalwa, a co-pilot, Alexander Pwolja, a Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP, and an orderly to the DIG, Sonatian Shirunam, a Sergeant, lost their lives in the police helicopter which crashed into a house at Garga village near Jos, Plateau State.
Abubakar said what a big loss! Our own quintessential John Haruna in the Nigeria Police Force has gone. I have lost a trusted officer and a confidant.
“He died doing what he loved doing best. He was a disciplinarian and a humble officer.
“The tragic incident occurred on their way to find a solution to the Jos crises. I pray God Almighty to forgive all the deceased persons of their sins and put them among the good ones in heaven.”
IGP Abubakar, led a delegation of police officers and the police service commission to commiserate with the deceased’s families.
Meanwhile, a condolence register has been opened at the Force Headquarters, Louis Edet House, Abuja.
Among the early callers who signed the register is the Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam.
The late DIG Haruna served last in Benue before he was elevated to the rank of DIG.
The Minister of Police Affairs, Captain Caleb Olubolade has also signed the register.
The Lagos State Police Command headquarters and the Special Fraud Unit on Milverton Street, Ikoyi, a large number of policemen and officers who had worked with the late DIG Haruna wept profusely. They expressed their heartfelt sadness at the loss.
Fashola Mourns John Haruna
The Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola condoled with the hierarchy of the Nigeria Police Force and the family of Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operations), John Haruna on the ill- fated air crash of a police chopper in Rukuba near Jos.
Governor Fashola in a condolence statement on the sad incident described the late DIG Haruna as a distinguished Police officer and a passionate professional.
He described the passage of Mr. John Haruna who once served as a Deputy Commissioner of Police in Lagos State and who died along with three other Police officers during a regular surveillance mission to Abuja from Jos as a big loss to the nation.
The governor also commended late DIG John Haruna’s dedication and devotion to duty just as he condoled with the Police High Command for the huge and irreparable loss.
ACN condoles with police over death of officers
The ACN has condoled with the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar over the death of Haruna John (DIG Operations), and three other officers in a helicopter crash in Jos on Wednesday.
National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, said it received the news of the crash and the death of the officers with shock and a sense of loss.
The party described John as an ``exceptionally brilliant and intrepid officer, and a policeman's police officer who contributed immensely to uplifting the force in his lifetime.”
It also said that the death was a huge loss, not only to the family, but also to the Nigeria police and the entire country.
ACN also called on the authorities to thoroughly investigate the crash with a view to unearthing the cause and at the same time preventing a recurrence.
Nigeria: Copter Crash kills new Police chief, 3 others
A helicopter belonging to Nigeria’s Special Task force has crashed in Jos, the Plateau state capital, northcentral Nigeria, killing all the four men on board, including the newly appointed Police Deputy Inspector General, Haruna John.
The helicopter crashed in a residential area, around Rukuba Road behind Jos Satellite Market as it embarked on it’s regular surveillance early Wednesday morning.
None of the four persons on board survived the crash as the helicopter burst into flames.
The National Emergency Management Agency(NEMA) has confirmed the incident.
The Special task force was set up to coordinate the security of the troubled state following killing of hundreds of people.
Police sources said Haruna John who was recently promoted from Commissioner of Police to Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG, was among the dead.
Haruna John, born in 1956 was formerly the Commissioner of Police in charge of Benue State before his promotion as DIG.
He was also in charge of Federal Capital Territory before his transfer to Benue State. He was from Taraba State.
Police Spokesman, Yemi Ajayi said four police officers, including a (deputy inspector general), were killed.
The officers’ mission was not clear as well, but a joint military and police task force is deployed in Jos to contain violence between Christian and Muslim ethnic groups that has rocked the city in recent years.
The identities of the other victims were yet to be made public.
