NURTW BOSS

4 arrested over fresh NURTW clash in Lagos.

Four persons were in Lagos arrested in connection with a violent clash involving rival groups of NURTW in the Lawanson area of Surulere, the police have said.
The clash was triggered by an attempt to install a new leadership at the Surulere branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) by a faction.
No fewer than 10 people were injured in the clash in which some dangerous weapons were freely used.
On Jan. 30, four people were reported dead in a similar clash on Lagos Island by NURTW factions while violence has also been unleashed on Isolo, Mushin and Iyana-Ipaja areas of the metropolis in past months.
Worried by the spate of clashes, the Commissioner for Transportation, Kayode Opeifa, had read a riot act to the union, threatening to take over the motor parks in those areas if the union failed to resolve its crises.
The spokesman for the state command, Joseph Jaiyeoba, said the suspects had been transferred to the state Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja.
He said no casualty was recorded in the clash.
Jaiyeoba said the resistance by a rival group of the union for a forceful take over by another group resulted in a bloody clash.
He said policemen were deployed to the area to restore peace, adding that an Armoured Personnel Carrier had also been stationed there.
Jaiyeoba appealed to members of the public to go about their normal businesses, as normalcy had returned to the area.
