Northern leaders call for concerted effort on Boko haram
Prominent northern leaders have advocated the need for collaboration with the federal government in tackling the Boko haram menace in Nigeria.
The leaders made this known during a meeting under the auspices of Abdulsalami Abubakar institute for peace and sustainable studies which held in Maizebu farms, Minna, the Niger state capital.
At the forum which was convened by former military head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubukar, former military president General Ibrahim Babangida noted that the elders of the north can no longer fold their hands and watch the region ravaged by violence.
General Babangida also acknowledged that the federal government alone cannot tackle the Boko Haram insurgency in the country and therefore made the call for the need to “consult widely in the search for the solution to the security challenges facing the nation.”
Fundamentalist sect, Boko Haram has been staging series of deadly attacks with bombings, prison breaks and setting of schools on fire in the region, killing hundreds of people and destroying properties.
Babaginda called on the northern elders to come together and support the federal government in its effort to face the menace of Boko Haram headlong.
Also speaking at the event, former military head of state and the convener of the meeting, General Abdulsalami Abubakar said the violence in some parts of the north is affecting the economic activities of the north, a situation he noted have left the north with huge developmental problems while the rest of the country is forging ahead.
He said the situation had been a very huge concern to him and he had therefore decided to bring together some notable elders in the north to lend their voices to the search for genuine solution to the Boko Haram crisis.
Some other northern leaders at the meeting include former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Senator Jubrin Aminu and former secretary to the government of the federation, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, Others are former Minister of Finance, Dr. Adumu Crioma, former Minister of External Affairs, John Shagaya and the chairman northern governors forum Dr Aliyu Muazu.
