EKHOMU IDENTIFIES STRATEGIC INITIATIVES FOR POLICE AGENCY

The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar has been advised to engage in strategic management of the Nigeria Police in order to achieve the goals of crime control and order maintenance.

Speaking during a courtesy call on the Inspector-General of Police in Abuja , Chairman of the School of Management and Security, Dr. Ona Ekhomu advised the police to implement strategic initiatives such as setting, monitoring and reviewing strategies for policing.

He also wants the police high command to establish innovative strategies to guide the work of the force; change management  processes, identification of innovative funding technologies for the police agency, information and intelligence-based decision-making, executive and managerial development and media strategy.

He said that the police agency was challenged by resource issues, improper mission focus and political interference, adding that through strategic management of the agency, the police would be able to minimize its weaknesses and reduce external threats, while enhancing its strengths  and capitalizing on external opportunities.

Dr. Ekhomu lamented that police fatality was too high in recent times due to attacks by Boko Haram, militants, kidnappers and armed robbers, and called for a reinvention of police tactics in order to reduce line of duty deaths.

He commended  IGP Abubakar for improving the image of the police force by removing checkpoints from the roads, and called for intensification of patrols in order to reduce violent crimes.

Speaking at the occasion, Abubakar said the image of the new Nigeria Police force was important, because  "without image,  we can’t command respect.”

He commended state governors who have been assisting the police with patrol vehicles and logistics, thousands of walkie talkies and tens of Armored Personnel Carries donated by State government to enhance police effectiveness.

Abubakar announced that the NPF Intelligence School would soon be established in Kwara State to increase the intelligence capabilities of the Nigeria Police Force.

He said at present over 20,000 police personnel were undergoing training in various schools and academies.
