Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola today commissioned patrol vessels for the use of Nigeria police in the state.
The commissioning ceremony was held at the office of Nigeria Police Marine Unit, Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.
Speaking at the occasion, Fashola advocated a decentralised police, stressing that there was an urgent need to change the idea of a central police.
“If the state governments can fund the police, they should be allowed to fund and run it,” Governor Fashola suggested.
In his speech, Commander of NNS Beecroft, Commodore N.J.O. Njoko said the vessels were purchased from contributions to the Lagos State Security Trust Fund which was established in 2007.
Njoko recalled that in 2007, the Lagos State government raised a panel on security headed by former Inspector General of Police, Mr. Musiliu Smith.
The report of the committee recommended better funding of the police. This, he said, later gave birth to the State Security Trust Fund.
