Pensions scam: Senate to quiz IG, Lamorde on Tuesday
The Senate Joint Committee on Pensions will quiz the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar and the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde on Tuesday, in continuation of its probe into the pension fraud.
Also to be quizzed is the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi and the Accountant General of the Federation, Jonah Otunla.
The Clerk to the committee, Mr. Uche Diogu, told our correspondent on the phone on Friday, that the invited witnesses must appear before the committee on Tuesday at 2pm.
The hearing which was supposed to hold last Thursday, would address the alleged involvement of the EFCC’s officials in the pensions scam.
The Senate would also receive presentation from the CBN on the activities of some banks in handling funds meant for pensions over a certain period.
The committee had observed that the lodgements of over N26bn into five different banks were done without recourse to extant financial regulations.
It had also noted that the accounts were opened before the approval of the Accountant General of the Federation was secured, which was in breach of the law.
The testimony of the former EFCC Chairman, Mrs. Farida Waziri, had faulted the banks’ claims that they made adequate financial reporting on questionable transactions in relation to pension funds management.
The CBN, as a regulator, is expected to throw some light on the operations of the banks in this regard.
There were allegations and counter allegations of bribery attempts between the committee and officials of the Pensions Reform Task Team.
While the committee had alleged that the team made efforts to bribe it in order to suppress its investigations, the team insisted that the committee was persecuting it because it failed to give bribes demanded by the committee.
