BRT driver arraigned for manslaughter

A sacked driver of the Lagos State-owned Bus Rapid Transit, Olushola Abegunde, on Thursday appeared before an Ebute Meta Magistrates Court in Lagos for allegedly killing a pedestrian.

Abegunde, 36, is standing trial before Magistrate M.O. Olubi on a two-count charge of reckless driving and the manslaughter of Mary Gbelhande.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Phillip Ugbodu, alleged that the accused, then a BRT driver, committed the offence on Dec. 15 on the Murtala Mohammed Way, Ebute Meta, Lagos.

Ugbodu told the court that the accused drove the bus in a dangerous manner and in the process hit Gbelhande, who later died at an undisclosed hospital.

The accused pleaded not guilty and was admitted to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned till Jan 17, 2011 for further hearing.
