Fake estate agent in court for N15 m fraud and Employee faces N3.4m fertiliser theft charge.


A 39-year-old man, who claimed to be an estate agent, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates Court for allegedly duping 44 people of N15 million.

The accused, Muritala Usman, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining money under false pretence and stealing.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Nwosu George, told the court that the accused fraudulently collected the money from unsuspecting people under the pretext of providing them with accommodation.

He said that the accused, who claimed that he was a genuine estate agent, later disappeared with the money.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 390(9), 419 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2003.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The accused was smuggled into the courtroom to avoid being mugged by the complainants.

One of the alleged victims, Olubunmi Yusuf, a school proprietress, said that the accused belonged to a syndicate using supernatural powers to dupe people.

The Magistrate, Mulikat Ali-Balogun, granted the accused N2 million bail with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till Feb. 7, 2011, for further hearing.

A driver, who allegedly stole 600 bags of fertilizer valued at N3.4 million, was on Tuesday charged before an Igbosere Magistrates Court, Lagos.

The accused, Nurudeen Ali, 36, who is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, has pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Augustine Onwuemene alleged that the accused with two others still at large had on Oct. 3 on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway conspired and stole the commodities, property of one Mohammed Daliye.

He said the accused was caught while disposing off the commodities following a tip-off.

He said the offence contravened Sections 390 (9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, laws of Lagos State.

The Magistrate, O.J. Awope, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till Jan. 17, 2011 for further hearing.
