Police command not aware of execution of militant leader says Commissioner

The Rivers Commissioner of Police, Suleiman Abba, has described as false and untrue, rumours that a militant leader had been executed.

The Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta had on Dec. 21, claimed that one of its commanders, Obese Kuna, and three of his colleagues were executed by the police.

But Abba said in Port Harcourt on Wednesday that the claim was untrue because the police recently charged Obese and his men to court.

Obese and 62 of his fighters were arrested by the Joint Military Task Force in November in the creeks in Rivers.

They were arrested for allegedly kidnapping 19 oil workers at Mobil platform and some other oil companies in Akwa Ibom.

The commissioner of police said, To the best of my knowledge, the rumour is not true. The police recently charged him and his associates to court and will not be part of such act.

He said that Obese and his colleagues were in prison custody awaiting the continuation of their trial, and had not been executed as claimed by MEND.

The rumour is not true. How can that happen when we recently charged them to court,'' he said.
