Federal Road Safety Commission

FRSC advocates return of rail system to reduce pressure on roads.

The Federal Road Safety Commission, on Wednesday urged the government to bring back rail system to reduce pressure on Nigerian roads.

Zonal Commander, RS2, Danjuma Garba said the freight that ten trailers would carry could be lifted at once by a locomotive.

Garba said If ten trailers are off our roads daily, risks will be managed, the roads will be saved from wear and tear and we will have less vehicles to control.

However, Lagos Railway District Manager of the Nigeria Railways, John Dottie said that freight services had resumed on Dec. 23.

Dottie said the first consignment of 300 tons of cement was lifted from Ewekoro to Agege and Ijoko cement depots.

According to him, the 300 tons of cement lifted by the train is equivalent to what more than 10 trailers can transport.

He said the lifting of the consignment would be on daily basis except on Sundays when the trains would go for maintenance.

He said that a new locomotive engine has been dedicated to the freight services.
