NGO trains police on combatting crime

A non-governmental organisation, CLEEN Foundation, has trained 15 police officers in Lagos in Geographic Information System technology to improve their ability to combat crime.

The foundation’s Research and Planning Programme Officer, Shola Omotosho, told journalists on Tuesday in Lagos that 15 police personnel selected from three divisions in the command had undergone the training.

The three divisions which benefitted from the training, Omotosho said, were Mushin-Olosa, Mushin-Alakara and Mushin-Ilupeju divisions.

She said Mushin was chosen due to the high rate of crime in the area.

The CLEEN official said that the project, which was in collaboration with the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, was part of an effort to enhance the efficiency of the Nigeria Police Force.

The crime mapping project will provide GIS technology for crime mapping police divisions in Lagos State, identify crime hotspots and neighbourhoods and aid deployment of resources by the police as well as help carry out a detailed analysis on the type of crime, location and time.

The project will also build a road network to assist the police get to crime spots through the shortest routes and train nominated police officers, who will be assigned to man the technology,” Omotosho said.

She said the foundation had purchased some equipment for the three police stations, adding that the project had so far cost about N10 million.

A representative of Fund,Adegbola Luis said that CLEEN Foundation was a worthy organisation in security matters, stressing that the Fund was partnering it without any financial implication.

Some of the police officers, commended CLEEN for the project, describing the effort as timely and good.

ASP Mary Ubangha of Mushin-Olosan Police station said that the project would help to checkmate crime and crisis in the area.

John Ologunoba of the Ilupeju Police Station said the equipment provided would help to develop a data base for the police, noting that subsequently all crime hot spots would easily be located.
