Police recover N6b from personnel audit.

The Inspector General of Police, Hafiz Ringim, on Tuesday in Abuja said about N6 billion was recovered through an audit of police personnel.

Ringim, who spoke at a meeting with officials of the Force Mechanised Salary Section , Police Pay Officers and accountants said there were ghost workers on the pay roll of the police.

He said a consultant hired by the Ministry of Police Affairs was able to establish that the staff strength of the Force was not up to 300,000.

The police boss said the fraud was being perpetrated by officers in collaboration with some staff of banks designated to pay personnel.

Ringim said the fraud was adversely affecting the budget of the police, adding that government would not allow such fraud to continue.

He said investigation revealed that some officers made multiple payments of between N10 million and N18 million into one account.

Ringim also said some pay officers in some commands under pay constables while there were reports of delay in payment of salaries and allowances.

He vowed that some officers would go to jail at the end of the audit, saying the exercise would be carried out in all commands.

Ringim also ordered the redeployment of all officers in charge of the MSS as well as pay officers who had spent at least two years at a post.

He decried a situation where pay officers in the Force continued to flout government’s order on e-payment, citing instances where salaries and allowances were still being paid through cheques.

In his remarks, the consultant, Bayo Adeyemo, said the little above 290,000 figure for police personnel presented at the beginning of the audit in September had dropped to 270,000.
