Forum participants suggest interaction between police and youths to end conflict.

Participants at a forum in Lagos have identified the lack of regular interactive fora between the police and the youth as being responsible for the conflicts between the two groups.

The participants drawn from the police, youth, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, transport workers and local council workers said that there was the need for such fora.

The interactive forum was organised by a non-governmental organisation, CLEEN Foundation, in collaboration with the Lagos State Security Trust Fund and the Area B Police Command, Lagos.

Area ‘B’ Commander,Kenneth Ebrimson said regular interactions between the police and the youth would stop the incessant fights between them.

Ebrimson said such interactions would enable the youth to appreciate the operations of the police while the police would learn about youth activism.

He called on the youth to relate peacefully with policemen in their localities, as well as volunteer information that would aid police in crime detection.

Dagga Tolar, who spoke on behalf the youth, commended the organisers of the forum, and expressed the hope that it would promote understanding between the two groups.

Tolar said joblessness among the youth and declining values in the society also contributed to the constant conflicts between the two groups.

He urged that the police should respect the rights of the youth while the youth should see policemen as friends.

Secretary to the Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government of Lagos State,Amosa Yinusa, expressed the hope that the forum would promote peace between the youth and the police, especially during the 2011general elections.

Yinusa said cordial relationship between the two groups would facilitate the development of the Nigerian society.

Director of CLEEN Foundation,Innocent Chukwuma, said the forum was informed by the incessant fights between the police and youth in the Ajeromi Ifelodun area.
