NDLEA chairman blames crimes on hard drug usage.

The Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA),Ahmadu Giadehas blamed the spate of kidnapping, armed robbery and other crimes in the country on the rampant use of hard drugs.

Giade, who paid a visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists House at Ikeja, said that checking such violent crimes required multi-level collaboration among various agencies in the anti-drug war.

The NDLEA chief was at the Press Centre to congratulate the four kidnapped journalists, who regained their freedom after a weeklong sojourn in the jungle.

Wahab Oba, Lagos Council Chairman of NUJ, the Assistant Secretary,Sylvester Okereke and two others were kidnapped in Abia on July 11 while returning from the union’s National Executive Committee meeting in Akwa Ibom.

Giade said Drugs and crime are interwoven Serious criminal acts such as kidnapping, armed robbery, murder, arson and many more are usually perpetrated under the influence of drugs.

According to him,The agency is working toward eliminating illicit drugs from the society as criminals rely on drugs to perpetrate their dastardly acts.

The NDLEA chairman commended newsmen for their strategic role in the anti-drug war, saying they had contributed immensely to the campaign against illicit drug trafficking in the country.

He said the media and the NDLEA are partners in progress in the campaign and war against drug trafficking in Nigeria.

Giade said the agency was poised to rid the country of hard drugs and drug traffickers in a bid to make it safe for all.

Oba thanked the NDLEA chief for the visit and urged the agency not to spare any effort to make Nigeria a drug-free country.

He promised that journalists would continue to discharge their duties as the watchdog of the society no matter whose ox was gored.

Giade was accompanied on the visit by the Director of Operations and General Investigations,Baba Hussein and the Director of Drug Demand Reduction, Lawrence Opara.
