Police, NCC, telecoms firms investigate false text messages.

The Lagos State Police Command, in collaboration with the Nigerian Communication Commission and cell phone providers, has begun investigating the source of false text messages circulating in the state.

Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Marvel Akpoyibo, told newsmen in Ikeja that the false messages had scared the state’s residents.

Akpoyibo said the false text messages, which were alarming in nature, were sent through GSM voice calls, text messages and e-mails alerting the public of crimes which were ostensibly under way and other forms of imminent dangers.

According to him, despite warnings to such persons to desist from the act, they had continued to spread the false messages aimed at misleading the public.

Akpoyibo said one of such false messages in the last one week was the alarm raised about the purported collapse of the Third Mainland Bridge.

He said The dangers of allowing this trend to continue unchecked are unquantifiable.

Akpoyibo appealed to the public to take advantage of the toll-free emergency lines in Lagos State to pass on useful information to the police.

The toll-free emergency lines are (767 and 122) while the police could also be reached through the control room numbers; 07035068242, 07055350249, 07055462708 or 08065154338.

Akpoyibo urged journalists and other interest groups to seek clarification and confirmation from the police on such false text messages, phone calls or e-mails received, before going to the press.

He assured residents of the determination of the police and other agencies to continue to consolidate and improve on the areas of crime fighting and promotion of public safety.
