Accident Prevention and Rescue Initiative has called on Vehicle Inspection Officers to intensify their efforts in flushing out rickety vehicles on the roads.
Executive Director of the organization,Fidelis Nnadi made the call on Monday in Abuja, while reacting to the accident which occurred on Sunday at Shangisa Bridge, on the outskirts of Lagos.
The accident was said to have resulted in the death of 48 people and the burning of about 20 vehicles.
A trailer driver was said to have lost control and rammed into a number of vehicles at a police checkpoint on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Nnadi said the various governments should come in by making sure that those charged with inspecting vehicles for road worthiness do their work properly.
He described the accident as tragic and sorrowful, and also blamed the tragedy on some policemen, who chased the trailer driver when he sped off’’.
According to him,the chase ended in a huge tragedy as the driver lost control and rammed into some buses and cars, causing an explosion that resulted in the fire that consumed many passengers.
He said the police have in recent times caused incidents that have resulted in the loss of lives of road users; a similar incident happened in Abuja last year, resulting in the death of 18 people when the police chased their bus.
