Man allegedly dupes traders over traveller's cheques.

A 31-year-old man has appeared before a Surulere Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for allegedly duping two traders in the guise of securing traveller’s cheques for them.

Jimmy Shobayo was arraigned on a four-court charge before Magistrate Mukaila Fadeyi but he pleaded not guilty, and was granted bail in the sum of N100,000 and two sureties.

Shobayo was accused of defrauding Messrs Dominic Asogba and Honovo James of N100, 000 and N90,000 respectively.

The prosecutor Sgt. Idowu Onime, submitted that the accused defrauded Asogba and James on August, 2008 at No. 18 Odaliki St., Ebute Metta.

Onime said Shobayo collected the money from the two traders with a promise to secure for them invitation letters and traveller’s cheques that would enable them to travel abroad.

He said Shobayo collected fake traveller’s cheques for his victims, and that he did not secure any letter of invitation for them.

Onime said the alleged offences contravened sections 419 and 309 (9) of the Criminal Code Lagos State, and that if convicted, the accused would be jailed for about 14 years.

Further hearing in the case will come up on Aug. 30.
