Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, has announced that magistrate’s courts would commence sitting on Saturdays.
Fashola dropped the hint at the inauguration of the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court in Lagos, saying the opening of the new court complex flags of the commencement of weekend sittings.
He said the novel scheme was to facilitate speedy dispensation of justice and was in accordance with the state’s reformed Magistrate’s Court Law.
The governor pledged that his administration would ensure that the constitutional provisions for securing the liberty of citizens were given the fullest expression in the state.
Fashola said the Saturday sitting of Magistrates would be done in a manner to be administratively determined.
He described the courthouse as the largest court building in Nigeria, equipped with modern verbatim court reporting facilities, adding that 30 reporters had also been approved for employment.
The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Olasupo Shasore said the court house was a demonstration of the commitment of the present administration to the reform of the state’s justice system.
Also, the Chief Judge, Justice Inumidun Akande, praised Fashola’s leadership, which she described as purposeful and focused.
The court complex was named after Justice JIC Taylor, a former chief judge of the state.
The ceremony was attended by many serving and retired judges of the state, justices of the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court and lawyers.
