Wife vows not to grant husband divorce until he builds her a house.

A Lagos wife has vowed not to grant her husband a divorce until he compensated her with a house for her contributions to their matrimonial home.

Oluremi Aina, 50, told a Grade ‘A’ Customary Court in Shomolu, Lagos, to dismiss her husband’s divorce suit until he adequately rewarded her efforts.

Adeniji Aina, 49, had taken his wife before the court seeking the dissolution of their marriage for alleged quarrelsomeness of his wife, a teacher.

But Oluremi blamed her problems on a second wife and outside interference.

The lady, who wanted reconciliation, told the court that the relations of her mother-in-law wanted the marriage to continue while those of her father-in-law supported the dissolution.

I have four children aged 22, 20, 10 and 6, but my problem started when my husband married another wife after both of us had jointly built our house.

Apart from the house, I contributed to the welfare of the family and had also been responsible for the education of my children,” she said.

In his response, Aina, who insisted on dissolution, told the court that he was ready to compensate his wife for her contribution to the family.

I appreciate my wife’s support but she is too quarrelsome. I promise to compensate her to the tune of only N300,000.

Aina, a printer, said he had made several efforts to find accommodation for Oluremi but she refused to move from their matrimonial home.

The President of the court,Aromi Bajulaiye, after listening to the couple, said though the wife could not produce documents to the house, the petitioner should compensate her.

Bajulaiye adjourned the case till Aug. 22, to enable the couple to reach a compromise.
