NDLEA re-arrest ex-convict, six others for alleged drug trafficking

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has announced the arrest of an ex-convict at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos, for alleged drug trafficking.

The suspect who was arrested on June three during the screening of passengers on an Iberia flight to Madrid, Spain, allegedly tested positive to ingesting drug.

Its Head of Public Affairs,Mitchell Ofoyeju who identified the suspect as Uzoaru Oliver said Uzoaru expelled sixty pieces of powdery substance weighing nine hundred and fifteen grammes.

Ofoyeju said Uzoaru was first arrested April last year while about to board a KLM flight to Holland with one point two seven three kilograms of cocaine in his stomach.

He said Uzoaru was charged to court and sentenced to eight months imprisonment after which he regained his freedom in December last year.

In a related development Chairman National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Ahmadu Giade has condemned a situation by which a convicted suspect spends below ten years in prison.

Giade want drug traffickers to be sentenced by courts to fifteen years as stipulated in the Act setting up the agency.

According to him, the unfortunate situation where drug convicts get re-cycled is avoidable and the re-arrest of the ex-convict is an indication that light sentences do not deter.

He said there is need for a collective responsibility and all hands must be on deck to work towards a drug-free Nigeria because a crime that is highly lucrative requires stiff penalty to enforce compliance.
