Court fines landlord, tenants for environmental nuisance

The Shomolu Customary Court in Lagos has imposed fines on a landlord and his seven tenants over poor environmental sanitation.

Court President, Modupe Bajulaiye, penalised the landlord of with eighteen thousand naira fine after he and the tenants admitted that their residence had constituted an environmental nuisance.

Bajulaiye said failure of the landlord and his tenants to pay the fines will lead to their three months imprisonment.

The landlord and the tenants were brought before the court on April fourteen by the Shomolu Council sanitation officer for poor sanitation in their bungalow.

The Sanitation Officer, Francesca Sofoluke, had told the court that the occupants failed to repair their building’s leaking roof, faulty septic tank and broken floors.

She noted that the offence was punishable under sections seven and eight of the Lagos State Environmental Health Law.
