CUSTOM DETAIN SHIP

The Nigeria Customs Service has detained another ship, MV Gumel, suspected to carrying toxic wastes.

The ship is the second one that was detained in the last two months after the detention of MV Maersk Nashville which sailed into Nigerian waters in April with a container of toxic materials.

Customs’ Public Relations Officer in Tin-Can Island Port, Chris Osunkwo, confirmed the detention of another ship with toxic wastes in Lagos.

The National Environmental Standards and Regulatory Enforcement Agency alerted the Custom about the arrival of the ship a few days ago.

The ship, which is presently detained at Berth 9 of the port, is heavily guarded by customs officials to forestall any efforts to escape.

The ship is suspected to have on board truck heads containing suspected hazardous wastes like refrigerators; used television sets, used batteries and compressor pots.

Osunkwo said further investigations into the ship’s contents had started.
