A Grade A Customary Court in Mushin, Lagos, has dissolved a seven-year-old marriage over neglect of the family by the husband.
Court President, Abayomi Ipaye, said efforts of the court to save the marriage failed as the petitioner,Bilikis Kushinmo, insisted on divorce.
Ipaye also noted that the respondent, Lukman Kushinmo, only appeared before the court once, in spite of several summons.
He held that the parties were free to co-habit with any partner of their choice.
The court president ordered Lukman to pay Bilikis two thousand naira monthly for the upkeep of the only child of the marriage, pending the decision of a family court on the child’s custody.
Bilikis had, in the suit she filed on February told the court that Lukman had not been taking care of her and their three-year-old child.
She said Lukman usually beat her each time she complained about his returning home late.
At the only time he appeared before the court, Lukman urged the court to reconcile him with Bilikis, saying he still loved her.
