2011 elections: PSC to monitor policemen conducts.
The Police Service Commission has concluded plans to monitor the conducts of officers and policemen to be deployed for the 2011 general elections.
Chairman of the commission,Retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police,Parry Osayande said the commission had already produced a code of conduct for police officers who would take part in the conduct of the elections.
Osayande said the commission had used the code to successfully monitor the conduct of policemen during the Anambra governorship election on Feb. 6 and the Area Council polls in the FCT in April.
He said the success of those two elections was as a result of the commission’s effective policing of policemen in course of their work.
Osayande said in the outgoing year, the commission promoted 1,286 senior police officers to various ranks, while some others would soon be elevated after passing the prescribed examinations.
The chairman said the commission had arrested the ugly situation where officers were stagnated on a rank for upward of 10 years.
Osayande said such stagnation made some to resort to lobbying through traditional rulers and influence peddlers in the society.
He, however, said disciplinary measures including reprimand, reduction in rank and out right dismissal were meted out to 211 officers in the year.
Osayande identified a permanent office accommodation as one of the biggest challenges facing the commission.
He said President Goodluck Jonathan had granted it permission to begin the building of its ultra modern office complex in 2011.
The commission shall remain focused in the implementation of its mandate to ensure that the Nigeria Police regain its past glory and become the envy of the society,he said.
