Ember months: 271 commuters die in 21 days
A total of 271 persons from across the country have died in motor accidents in the last three weeks, Security Alert gathered authoritatively from the Federal Road Safety Commission.
This came as the FRSC Corps Marshal and Chief Executive Officer, Osita Chidoka, put the number of death arising from auto crash on the nation‘s roads this month at an average of 10 persons per day.
Chidoka, who stated this during the commission‘s ongoing ember month campaign against road accident and abuse of traffic rules, said 271 deaths were recorded within the first 21 days in December.
He also said 1,275 commuters suffered various degrees of injury, while 1,420 persons were rescued within the period.
The commission, he said, had since December 15 when it flagged off the 2010 nationwide ember month campaign tagged ”Operation Zero Tolerance: Sanctity of Life, increased its surveillance on all federal highways to check spate of accident.
He said, ”We started our campaign as a result of the anticipation that there will be more vehicular activities on the road as many people will travel and more haulage activities will take place during the festive period.
Chidoka attributed the prevalence of accident during the ember months to increase in vehicular movement and poor attitude of road users who get carried away by the euphoria of the celebration.
In a related development, the commission‘s Lagos State Sector Commander, Jonas Agwu, said though the number of vehicles plying the roads was on the increase, the rate of accidents had reduced.
Meanwhile, record shows that a total of 293, 268 road traffic offenders were arrested within the outgoing year for various offences ranging from overloading, over-speeding, non-use of seatbelt among others.
Also, available statistics from the commission showed that no fewer than 10, 781 persons lost their lives in road accidents between 2008 and 2009, while about 48, 955 others sustained various degrees of injuries within the period.
In 2009 alone, about 4,120 persons lost their lives in road crashes, while 20,975 persons were said to have been injured in fatal accidents involving 11,031 vehicles across the nation.
