Eight men who allegedly stole a Toyota Hiace bus valued at N6 million were on Monday charged before a Surulere Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos.
The accused, Charles Chigozie, 28; Obi Okwuchukwu, 32; Christian Nwokeji, 44; Taofeek Kadiri, 25; Sunday Babalola, 67; Festus Alefule, 22 and Chika Azike, 29, are facing charges of conspiracy, stealing and receiving stolen property.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Idowu Onime, told the court that the first accused, Chigozie, allegedly stole the bus, property of Mr Fredrick Otoide, on Sept. 9, 2009 at Orile-Iganmu in Lagos.
Onime said that the bus was stolen from the workshop of Kadiri and Babalola and subsequently sold to Okwuchukwu at Ladipo Spare Parts Market in Mushin.
The prosecutor said that immediately Okwuchukwu received the vehicle, it was cannibalised and the parts sold to Alefule, Elias and Azike at No. 2 Census Close, Bode Thomas St., Surulere, Lagos.
He submitted that the offence contravened Sections 390 (9), 427 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
All the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Chief Magistrate, M.K.O Fadeyi, granted them bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties each in like sum and adjourned the case till Jan. 24, 2011 for trial.
