A 49-year-old businessman, Ritade Johnson, was on Thursday arraigned for fraudulently selling some plots of land, valued at N40 million.
Johnson appeared before an Igbosere Magistrates Court on a four-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining money under false pretence and stealing.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Ingobo Embby, said the accused, with others at large, had on April 30 at Lekki sold the plots of land to one Mr Patrick Okwu.
He said the accused fraudulently obtained the money from Okwu knowing full well that the plots of land did not belong to him.
Embby told the court that the accused, in perfecting the act, falsely claimed to be lawyer and gave a business card with inscription ‘LEKAN ALABI & CO, Solicitors and Advocates’.
He said that the offence contravened Sections 419, 423, 483 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2003.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N2 million and with two sureties in like sum.
The Magistrate, Adebayo Sonuga, adjourned the case till Feb. 3, 2011 for further hearing.

Conman charged with issuing dud cheque
A 29-year-old man, Ndubuisi Ofoekwe, who police said was notorious for issuing dud cheques after having exotic meals in hotels, was on Thursday charged with fraud.
Ofoekwe was arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates Court on a one-count charge of obtaining assorted food and drinks, valued N11,200, under pretext.
The prosecutor, Insp. Stanley Iwok, said that the accused had been a guest of the police several times, having formed the habit of dressing gorgeously into highbrow restaurants to order assorted foods and drinks.
He said that after helping himself to the delicacies, the accused would issue an open cheque which would later be returned unpaid.
The prosecutor said that luck, however, ran out on Ofoekwe at the Oriental Hotel, Lekki, Lagos, on Oct. 16 when he issued a cheque for N11,200 and was promptly arrested.
Iwok said the offence contravened Section 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2003.
The accused, who was without any legal representative, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted N5,000 bail with one surety in like sum.
The Magistrate, O.I Oguntade, adjourned the case till Jan. 19 for further hearing.
