The Standards Organisation of Nigeria on Wednesday called for legislation that would control trade malpractice in the country.
Director General , John Akanya, said in Abuja that legislation would help control unbridled importation into the country.
Akanya, said The principle of standardisation is voluntary but it is the laws that must be made to control business and for the manufacturers to take liability for their products.
He frowned at the situation where importers were allowed to bring in products without being made to take liability for them.
He said SON was able to check importation of sub standard goods into the country because of the arrest of those producing SON Conformity Assessment Programme (SONCAP) certificates.
SONCAP is an initiative of the Federal Government to check and control the importation of sub standard and unsafe products before they are imported into the country.
He listed certificates being forged to include SON certificate, port clearance certificate and NAFDAC certificate.
