Saggay urges judiciary to punish electoral offenders appropriately.

A prominent lawyer, Professor Itse Sagay, on Monday called on the judiciary to punish all those he described as electoral robbers, as prescribed by the constitution.
Sagay said in Lagos that the judiciary should not allow those who committed electoral fraud to enjoy their proceeds.
He said for democracy to be sustained, the judiciary and other stakeholders had crucial roles to play.
According to him, the judiciary as the last hope of the citizens, must administer justice without fear or favour.
The lawyer lamented the inability of the judiciary to punish those who committed electoral offences in past elections, saying their non-punishment was a threat to the nation’s democracy.
He described as a sad commentary on the nation’s democracy the recent situation in Ekiti and Osun where the governors ruled for more than three years out of four years before being asked to vacate their seats.
He advocated prompt disposition of election litigations before the swearing in of elected officers, saying that the judiciary should ensure the compliance with the provisions of the constitution and the electoral act.
He called on Nigerians to work together to ensure the success of the 2011 elections and reduce electoral fraud to the barest minimum.
