June 2011: New deadline to end ex-militants training

The December 2010 deadline for conclusion of the training of 20,192 ex-militants under the Federal Government’s post amnesty programme has been shifted to June, 2011.

The extension,is to accommodate additional 6,166 trainees who recently embraced the amnesty programme.

Chairman Foundation for Ethnic Harmony in Nigeria, Allen Onyema made this known at the ex-militants rehabilitation camp at Obubra, Cross River.

The Foundation for Ethnic Harmony in Nigeria is a Non-Governmental Organisation engaged by the Federal Government to conduct transformational training on non-violence for the repentant militants.

Onyema however said the last batch of the old trainees would pass out within the original deadline.

He said his organisation would work hard to ensure that the June, 2011 deadline for the new trainees was realised.

Onyema explained that the December 2010 deadline for the programme was fixed in view of the 2011 general elections earlier scheduled to take place in January 2011.

According to him, beyond the deadline, the skills acquisition component of the post amnesty programme would continue, explaining that some of aspects of it might take a year or two to conclude.

He said There are plans also to put, in the curriculum of the training, further non-violence training, to further deepen the training the participants have received.

The NGO boss hinted that the management of the Obubra training camp might be streamlined to ensure that programmes were better handled.
