Onipanu Killing: SCID Grills Mushin DPO


Detectives at the State Criminal Investigation Department , Panti, Yaba, Lagos are currently interrogating a Superintendent of Police and the Divisional Police Officer, Olosan Police Station, Mushin, Lagos, Muhammed Bala Malla for allegedly killing a diesel dealer, Femi Olayiwola, a.k.a. Femi Best, in front of the Onipanu Police Station, on Sunday, 4 December, 2010.

Crime Correspondent gathered that the suspect is being detained in a cell in Panti where he was transferred after being arrested on the orders of the state Commissioner of Police, Marvel Akpoyibo.

Akpoyibo, it was learnt, had earlier warned his men not to use the firearms entrusted in their care on the people, stressing that any officer found to have misused the arms should be ready to face the consequences.

A police detective at Panti confirmed the presence of the DPO at the SCID but refused to give details of the investigation of the murder so far. He, however, assured that the DPO would be brought to book, if found guilty.

The DPO was alleged to have shot the late Olayiwola in his car at about 5.30 a.m. on Sunday, 4 December, in front of the Onipanu Police Station while coming from a party in company of his elder brother and others.

Witnesses claimed that the DPO pursued the Honda Odyssey car with registration number BX 714 KSF driven by the deceased in his tinted Camry car with registration number BM 601 IKJ and shot him dead in front of the Onipanu Police Station where he sought refuge.

The identity of the arrested DPO was revealed by the Area Commander of Area ‘H’, ACP Godwin Nwobodo, while addressing angry youths from Shomolu, who stormed Onipanu Police Station to protest the murder of the diesel dealer.

Widow of the deceased, Tamilore, told this medium that she was yet to come to terms with the fact that her beloved husband was dead. She appealed to the authorities to ensure that the killer of her husband was brought to book.

Members of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR, Somolu chapter, also led a protest to the Lagos State House of Assembly over the killing.

They called on the lawmakers to ensure that the matter was not swept under the carpet like previous cases of police extrajudicial killings.
