Bombing is terrorism, says Chief of Army Staff

THE Christmas Eve’s multiple explosions in Jos, Plateau State, which led to the death of many persons, with some people injured, have been described by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Azubuike Ihejirika, as an act of terrorism.

Ihejirika, who spoke with reporters in Port Harcourt Saturday, said he was in the Rivers State capital and Aba, the commercial city of Abia State, to celebrate Christmas with troops in their bases.

He described as a challenge, the unfortunate bomb blasts, which he said would put the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to task, declaring that intelligence gathering of the Nigerian Army must be enhanced.

The Army Chief said Nobody is taking it (bomb blasts) lightly and I believe by now, the governor and the JTF commander would have made some broadcast to reassure the people that they are not left alone.

Ihejirika further assured that the Nigerian Army would assist in ensuring the conduct of peaceful elections in 2011.

He disagreed with some persons who were insinuating that the JTF men, in their recent operation at Ayakoromo in Burutu Local Governemnt Area of Delta State, committed genocide.

The chief of army staff assured that army engineers would soon reconstruct the buildings destroyed at Ayakoromo, whether the damage was caused by soldiers or not.

Ihejirika warned that there were no way militants or gunmen would shoot at soldiers and they would expect the military men not to return fire.

The army chief reiterated that the Major-General Charles Omoregie-led JTF in the Niger Delta would soon dislodge the leader of the Niger Delta Liberation Force, General John Togo, from the creeks of the Niger Delta.
